10 Fast Facts about Colorado Medical Marijuana Program

To obtain a medical marijuana card from a medical marijuana doctor in Colorado, applicants must be over the age of 18 with a valid state issued photo ID. Applicants must have a debilitating medical condition with valid medical records outlying their qualified condition.
  1. Colorado became a medical marijuana state in 2000 when 54% of voters passed Amendment 20.  
  2. In Colorado 108,526 patients were registered for the medical marijuana program in 2012.
  3. Denver County is the largest medical marijuana county in Colorado with 17,711 patients. Second is El Paso County with 14,888 patients.
  4. To obtain a recommendation from a Colorado Marijuana Doctor, a patient must suffer from Cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS positive, cachexia, severe pain; severe nausea; seizures, including those that are characteristic of epilepsy; or persistent muscle spasms, including those that are characteristic of multiple sclerosis.
  5. The cost to apply for a Colorado Marijuana Card is $33.
  6. Patients with a Colorado Medical Marijuana Card may possess up to 2 ounces of cannabis and grow up to 6 cannabis plants with 3 or fewer being mature at any one time.
  7. 68% of approved medical marijuana patients are male.
  8. The average age of male medical marijuana patients in Colorado is 41.
  9. The average age of female medical marijuana patients in Colorado is 43.
  10. Since 2001, 204,312 patients have registered with the medical cannabis program.
